The Mercury Insurance Drive Safe Challenge activated in Anaheim, California with a free, daylong teen driving program, which included hands-on skills training within an enclosed, secure parking lot at the Honda Center. Helping Mercury impart safe driving tips and defensive driving techniques were the NHL Anaheim Ducks and the California Highway Patrol.
Participants included high school hockey players, peers and parents from all over Southern California. Former Ducks stars Scott Niedermayer and Teemu Selänne were also present with Teemu taking up the challenge of testing his own driving skills. In addition to collision avoidance and car handling techniques, students were told to pull out their cell phones and text while driving at speeds of up to 25 miles per hour on the enclosed course get an understanding of how dangerous and scary distracted driving is, leading to several knocked over cones!
