Anaheim Ducks Defensive Driving Program
The Mercury Drive Safe Challenge initiative kicked off with a free, daylong defensive driving program, which included hands-on skills training within an enclosed, secure parking lot at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. Helping Mercury impart safe driving tips and defensive driving techniques were the NHL Anaheim Ducks and the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Participants included high school hockey players, peers and parents from all over Southern California. Former Ducks stars Scott Niedermayer and Teemu Selänne were also present with Teemu taking up the challenge of testing his own driving skills.
All participants learned collision avoidance and car-handling maneuvers from professional driving instructors including how to handle an out-of-control car on a slippery surface. To get an understanding of how dangerous and scary distracted driving is, students were told to pull out their cell phones and text while driving at speeds of up to 25 miles per hour on the enclosed course, which lead to several knocked over cones.
